DRIIMB webinar: AI in the biosciences (AIBIO-UK)
Tuesday 03 March 2026, 14:00 - 15:00

We are pleased to announce the next talk in the DRIIMB Webinar series by Prof. Andrew French, University of Nottingham

Title: AI in the Biosciences: a UK-wide network, and some example projects from Nottingham

Abstract

"In this talk I will introduce the BBSRC-funded AI in the Biosciences (AIBIO-UK) community building network.  Now in its 3rdyear, the network is a place to find and share information about AI in biosciences. We do this via small seed funding pots, and also by helping to deliver events.  I will talk about the network and how you can get involved.  In addition, I will present some recent examples of AI use in biosciences from my research world – developing approaches to phenotype plants.  Much of the research carried out at the Computer Vision Lab in Nottingham tackles plant phenotyping challenges, by building new algorithms to analyse plant science data across a wide variety of data types and modalities.  I will present some recent example projects as a showcase” - Andrew French

Speaker Bio
Andrew is Director of the BBSRC 'AI in the Biosciences' Network, and lead of the Computer Vision Lab at the University of Nottingham. He is interested in many areas of computer science, specialising in computer vision and image analysis. A particular area of interest is the automated analysis of biological images, particularly phenotyping of plants and crops, using AI approaches. This involves a large variety of imaging modalities, from microscopy, confocal and micro-CT through to hyperspectral and UAV-style images. He runs training courses on image analysis, and currently teaches computer vision and programming. More details can be found here.
